The Future is YOW! Help us to foster a conservation ethic in the leaders of tomorrow

Here at SWCC we are extremely proud of the Youth On Water (YOW!) Program. What began in 2009 as a small project with six youth in Hazelton, has become a extremely successful regional outdoor recreation program.

Today YOW! has over 100 participants from six communities and is empowering regional youth through on-the-water activities that connect them with local rivers, a sense of adventure, environmental awareness and technical raft guide training.

The YOW! program is free to participants because of the generosity and passion of our community. Your monthly donation makes all the difference. SWCC's goal is that eventually our entire Youth On Water Program can be run in collaboration with Tides Canada Initiatives  solely through our monthly supporters. The future is YOW!

A Sustainable Sacred Headwaters: Reserach, Education and Outreach

SWCC's goal is to ensure that our watershed remains intact and any development occurs in a sustainable manner that protects natural and cultural resources and support our communities, now and in the future. Help us to make a difference by supporting our research, education and outreach programs.

SWCC's community building work includes:

  • Education and outreach programs empower our community with the knowledge and inspiration to build a more sustainable future around our healthy rivers.
  • Expeditions get people of all ages out on the land to connect them with their watershed and infuse their lives with the sense of place that is the foundation to our regional art and culture
  • Developing tourism and sustainable livelihoods in the watershed presents such as trail building and resource management, fishing and hunting guiding and cabin building.
  • Research projects are collaborative in nature with a baseline inventory focus on wild salmon enumeration and habitat, water quality and cultural heritage resources in remote headwaters ecosystems

The staff and directors of the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition would like to extend our deepest gratitude to you for your support over the past six years. Since 2004 we’ve had the great honour to stand confidently on your behalf and work collectively toward a dynamic conservation vision.

As for 2008/2009… the proudest accomplishments, brightest moments and most outrageous stories are best told around the fire, but we thought we’d include a few outstanding accomplishments here since so much has happened in such a short time. They include:

  • Identifying undocumented salmon spawning and rearing habitat in the Skeena headwaters
  • Successful YOW program
  • Providing critical support for legal, conservation policy and traditional use projects
  • Keeping the Sacred Headwaters free of coalbed methane development – Moratorium implemented
  • Facilitating education and outreach programs from Vancouver Island to Terrace
  • Headlining CBM concerns in media around the world, including; the London Financial Times, Globe and Mail, BCTV, CBC and many more

For 2010, SWCC’s long term vision remains committed to a sustainable economy and healthy cultures rooted in our thriving salmon watershed. A few of our main objectives include: large, collaborative and effective enhancements to the Sacred Headwaters Campaign, creating a Skeena Watershed school curriculum based on conservation and introducing new field courses for youth and adults.

All donations will directly benefit our watershed by supporting one of our main programs for 2010. THANK YOU, your support and dedication to the Skeena is what keeps us inspired and will keep our rivers thriving for generations to come!

Warmest regards,

The Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition Crew

The Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition (SWCC) is a grassroots organization (aka – local yocals) staffed by passionate individuals and supported by our communities, members and volunteers.  Actually – SWCC is YOU!

We’re a hardworking crew with big aspirations and your donation — no matter the size — will help us achieve our goals of supporting and educating our community, protecting our watershed and supporting good development projects.

There are two keys ways you can give to SWCC and support our work.  The first step is deciding what work you’d like to support.

SWCC Charitable Programs

If you like the looks of our awesome charitable programs such as Youth on Water, Women on Water, school education programs, science & research and would like to contribute to the ongoing success of these activities, please donate to our Skeena Watershed Fund through Tides Canada Foundation.

We use these funds to collaborate with various charitable organizations and support work that advances our mission to cultivate a sustainable future from a sustainable environment rooted in culture and a wild salmon ecosystem.

SWCC's Other Awesome Work

Are you interested in supporting SWCC’s activities that are not considered charitable? When you support SWCC’s non-charitable activities, you are not eligible for a tax refund. However, this support is extremely important to us.

This funding will help us to carry out our work on the Sacred Headwaters Campaign, pay our dedicated staff, train and support our volunteers, pay our office rent, phone bills and much more.

It supports our core operations and allows us successfully fulfill our mandate. In a nutshell, if you want to donate to the work that SWCC does that will most affect change and you aren’t fussed about a tax receipt, donate here!

You can donate to our non charitiable activities online with your credit card or paypal here:

SWCC Volunteer teams

Youth on Water and Women on Water Team: Youth on Water and Women on Water are annual programs which empower youth and ladies of our community through on-the-water activities. Find out more about these awesome programs here.

Event and Fundraising Team: At SWCC we love hosting events and when we do it’s all hands on deck! Tasks could be anything from stuffing envelopes, making buttons, decorating a hall or setting up for a presentation.

Expedition and Fieldwork Team: Trail scouts needed to find, trim and map trail systems in the region.

Research Team: Research assistants to come on expeditions to act as research helpers. Lots of hiking, rafting and outdoor work.

Crafty and Creative Team: If you have artistic skills, or just love making stuff, we would love to hear from you. At SWCC we love using art as a way to get our message out. So whether it’s film, painting, photography or dance. We want to hear from you!

Handy Types Team:  We’ve just expanded our office and need people to help us get it into ship shape. This includes building shelves, decorating, finding bookshelves and other furniture, setting up a coffee station and generally making SWCC’s headquarters more cosy.

The Tech Team: Are you super tech savvy? Can you design websites, write web code, manage a website and social media networks? You can do this from anywhere, all you need is a computer, though we’d love it if you were here with us in Hazelton to hang out!

Of course if you have any other skills or services you are able to provide on a voluntary basis, or ideas about an event or something that you think needs to happen in our communities – let us know!

So you've established that you have mad skills, you have decided on a team, now meet Cynthia!

Cynthia McCreery is our wonderful Northern Organizer. Cynthia will not only be working hard to bring to you more kickass events and activities this year, she is also going to be looking after all you lovely volunteers.

“I first worked for SWCC in 2009 to curate the "Spirit of the River" art exhibit. It was fun and exciting and perfectly in line with my values.  I was raised a vegetarian in a logging family in Hazelton so you could say that I’m a perfect mix of hippy and redneck and maybe that’s why I love SWCC! My son is part Gitxsan and this has created an even stronger connection with this place and the need to look after it.

My first experience with SWCC was as a volunteer.  Whether it was a film night, a fundraising dance or River day, I always found it was so much fun to be involved. Here at SWCC we are at the cutting edge of making things happen and standing up for the place we love.  You can be a part of this exciting organization in so many ways.  You, the volunteer, are the life of SWCC and we want you to feel like a part of our team.  Call me to chat about the many ways we utilize and appreciate our volunteers.  I can't wait to meet you!" - Cynthia
